rocket stove allows for economical and efficient use of fuel as it
combusts at such a high temperature producing a minimum of gases and
particulates. These stoves can be created with masonry, metal flue
pipe, and steel drums. They lend themselves readily to built-in furniture
(e.g. a cob bench) in which the flue pipe may be run, creating thermal
mass storage for added comfort and heat retention. During this course
we will build a rocket stove in a small garden structure as its primary
heating source. Students will learn the fundamentals of heat and combustion,
how a rocket stove functions, and its construction. A wonderful stove
design for permanent installations and portable heating. BYOM (Bring

Floors - Earthen floors are the oldest type of flooring known
to humanity, and a finely finished and sealed earthen floor still
has appeal and applicability in our contemporary world. In this course
you will learn how to create a durable and beautiful earthen floor
that can be constructed with gravel, sand, and clay. Part of the beauty
of these floors is their simplicity and ease of construction, requiring
a minimal cost in materials and a basic skill with the materials.
At the same time, properly made earthen floors provide a solid surface
that protects against moisture penetration and heat loss from below
and offers a pleasing, long-lasting, water-repellant surface to the
foot and eye. These floors can be incorporated into nearly any structure
with agreeable result.
