Build a Strawbale House

Have you ever had the desire to build your own strawbale structure from scratch? This popular course will introduce you to the fundamental concepts and skills needed to get started on your own project. The course will cover: successful strawbale design, proven construction techniques, foundation systems, framing doors and windows, interior details, building to code, and other important topics.

You will help build a small load-bearing structure, including foundation and roofing. In addition, you will have the opportunity to mix and apply various plasters.

Straw Bale Workshop

Learn how to turn a local renewable resource into an energy efficient home at this straw bale workshop in Linden. Participants will learn about straw bale construction and spend the day building a straw bale house. There will be a slide show on Saturday evening, and and a demonstration on earth plaster on Sunday. The workshop is being conducted by Howard Switzer of Ecoville ArchiTechs. Straw Bale Workshop

During this two and a half day, hands-on workshop we’ll assess and install the straw bales into a wall system and detail and prepare the bale walls for the plastering stage. On Friday evening, we’ll cover structural issues, design of bale wall systems and answer common questions associated with choosing straw bale homes, and see a slide show of bale homes. Over the weekend, we’ll put that theory into practice by assessing, cutting and retying, stacking, and stuffing straw bales for a small writing cabin.

Straw bale building utilizes the traditionally wasted resource of straw to construct highly insulated buildings that are both beautiful and eco-friendly.
