Green Oak - Run by a team of experienced timber-framers. We will be covering many aspects of timber-frame building and you will get the chance to make and fit your own mortice & tenon joints, whittle pegs on the shave horse, learn about draw bores, scribing, diminished haunch and scarf joints. You will get to use a variety of traditional tools such as the draw knife, shoulder plane, froe, adze and of course the mallet and chisel. On the final day we will be raising the barn.

The posts, sills, plates and beams of a ten foot square timber frame are prefabricated during the course using only traditional tools and techniques, and the frame is erected on the last afternoon. Basic Timber Framing - The course begins with the basic mortise and tenon joint, and then expands on these techniques to cover through-tenons, shouldered mortises and scarf-joinery. These techniques have been applied in the construction of North House's blacksmith shop and other structures on campus. The class will explore the use of traditional tools in timber framing, as well as adaptations using common and specialized modern tools.
