A black bamboo building with musical legs in Bali.

This is one of the buildings at Bambu Indah, a hotel resort in Bali owned by John Hardy of Green School fame. It's built with sustainably grown black bamboo from Java. Black Bamboo (Gantochloa atroviolacea) grows as tall as 12m in Central & West Java where it is known as Wulung. The design of this building, which was built in 30 days, is based on the rumah bagonjong (spired roof house) of the Minangkabau people who live in Sumatra.

A traditional rumah bagonjong (below) has multiple functions. It's a home, a hall for family meetings and a place for ceremonial activities. Minangkabau society is matrilineal, that's where the homes are owned by the women and passed down the female line from mother to daughter; but the buildings are maintained by the male line.

The Minangkabau people traditionally embellish the walls, pillars and ceilings with carved and painted motifs based on the natural environment.

The building the rumah bagonjong inspired is not decorated with motifs but rather with instruments giving the building musical legs which are played in the video above.
