Cords of wood for building should 'clink' together not 'thud'...

Like most farmsteads all over the world, homes, workshops and barns are made from natural local materials, but not all of them with the distinctive and quirky style of this 1978 cordwood pottery shop in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, USA built by Steve Dunker. If you are building with cords of wood you should remove the bark and you must allow the logs to dry, the length of time depends on the species of wood you are using but softwoods are more suited to cordwood building.

The video (above, right) shows a simple but very effective time saving technique to cut cords of wood. Richard Flatau, a renowned cordwood builder and author says, "The debarked wood is dried just like any other piece of firewood. Under protective cover, wood is typically dry in 6 to 12 months depending upon the species and weather conditions. If you take two pieces of wood and hit them against each other they should make a 'clinking' sound. If they make a 'thud', there probably still too green."
