Straw bale buildings at 'The Canelo Project' and Pattern No.92 'Bus Stop'

Simple and beautiful straw bale buildings each standing on stone stem walls and plastered with clay. This is the bus stop, one of the many beautiful straw bale buildings at Bill and Athena Steen's Canelo Project in Elgin, AZ, USA. Among the main straw bale buildings you will also find (see below, left to right) the bike house, an outdoor shower and a sawdust toilet. Many of the buildings were built during their straw bale workshops.

Pattern No. 92 'Bus Stop' from A Pattern Language says bus stops should be tiny centers of public life, built as part of the gateways into neighbourhoods. They should be located so they work together with several other activities, at least a newsstand, outdoor shelter and seats. They should be easily recognised, pleasant and comfortable. The Canelo bus stop is a lovely example of this with its wide seat, clay art, window facing the woodland, niche and decorations.
