The alcove at Casa Batllo in Barcelona, Spain

This is Casa Batllo in Barcelona, Spain. The facade is made of local sandstone covered with colourful Catalan mosaic. Gaudi, one of the first recyclers, used rejected and imperfect tiles from other projects for Casa Batllo. He hated straight lines preferring organic, nonlinear patterns just like today’s natural builders. The alcove is one of Alexander's patterns No. 179. He recommends making small places at the edge of any common room just large enough for two people to sit, chat, or play… but Gaudi knew that already!
