A brand new cob cottage in Cornwall, England by Clayworks

This little beauty in Cornwall, England was built in 2005 by Adam and Katy of Clayworks. They used clay from the site, straw from the fields next door and aggregate from a quarry just 4 miles away. Adam and Katy build homes professionally and on this job, rather than mixing cob by hand and foot, as many cobbers do, they mixed the cob with a JCB digger.

They would mix about 15 tonnes of cob in one JCB session and lay 8 to 9 tonnes of cob per day with 2-3 people using pitchforks and thwackers. The thatching was done by MIke Pawluk.

We don't have a video of Clayworks mixing cob with a JCB but in the video left Kindra Welch uses a bobcat to mix cob for one of their projects at Clay Sand Straw. On the right is the first of Adam and Katy's books, 'Building with Cob'. They have also published Using Natural Finishes.
