A chestnut and oak cobwood roundhouse in Vausseroux, France

Tony Wrench has built cobwood roundhouses all over Europe and has lived in his own in Wales since 1997. The one pictured right was built in August 2014 in Vausseroux, France.

The logs are 16 inches (40 cm) long with a double wall of cob mortar (a clay, sand and straw mix) with straw insulation between the two walls. The smaller logs are chestnut and the big ones are oak.

The roof tiles are fixed to the wooden sarking (or pug) with cob but with an additional 10% lime in the mix to make it more water resistant. In the video above you will see some techniques for planning out and laying the tiles on the reciprocal roof. A coloured bottle mandala was built into the roundhouse which you can just see above on the left of the roundhouse. Tony's work has been so inspirational to many that the Welsh government's guidelines for development of settlements in the open countryside called 'One Planet Developments' uses Tony's home on the cover of the Technical Advice Booklet. You can see more of Tony's work in the collection of pictures far right and find out more about this building in our natural building group, including a picture of the bottle mandala from the inside.
