The oak roof at Gainsborough Old Hall, Lincolnshire, England

You are looking at oak timbers as they were built over 500 years ago. It's the view of the roof from the kitchen, with its enormous fireplace, in Gainsborough Old Hall in Lincolnshire, England. It's the most complete medieval kitchen in England.

Gainsborough Old Hall is among the biggest and best-preserved medieval manor houses in England. It is part oak timber-framed but mostly brick, built in 1460 with later Elizabethan additions. It's a roof King Henry VIII may have looked at when he visited Gainsborough in 1509 and again in 1541.

The kitchen still contains many original features, including two bread ovens and two massive open fireplaces (below), each large enough to roast an ox.
