Xuankong Monastery rests on roundwood timbers over 1,000 years old

This is the Hanging Monastery of Xuankong Si, China built in the Tuoba Wei Dynasty around 471-523 AD, some 1,400 years ago and still clinging on tight to the foot of Mt. Hengshan. The monastery has been renovated over the centuries but the original structure remains intact. The monastery has held on so well because of it's deliberate over engineered solution. Horizontal shafts cut into the side of the mountain carry strong lengths of hard wood cut from single trees.

The depth of the holes, hardness of the rock and strength of the roundwood timbers provided a strong base. There are sufficient supports to ensure that if the roundwood timber needed to be replaced then one can be removed without impacting on the structural integrity of the monastery.
