Sgraffito tile using lime and natural pigments by Raquel Rodriguez Puebla

Sgraffito, where you cut away layers of lime plaster, is the opposite of pargeting where you build them up ...

This is the beautiful sgraffito work of Raquel Rodriguez Puebla. Raquel uses clay tiles as a base (below) to which she adds lime putty mixed with sand to form a base coat which dries for 5 days. Then mixing natural pigments again with lime putty and sand she adds another layer which again must dry for 5 days.

Further layers are added until finally she cuts her design while the layers are still soft enough producing her wonderful sgraffito design.
