In 1983 excavations began in Norway that uncovered the largest
Viking house in the world. The discovery was of a chieftain's
home 67m (220ft) long and almost 10m (33ft) wide built around
500 AD and rebuilt a couple of times around 700 AD extending
the longhouse to a staggering 83m (272ft) long. This is the
Lofotr Viking
Museum, a reconstruction of the longhouse built from turf
and wood close to the site of the original. On the hills
nearby there are traces of at least eight other longhouses,
with probably more still to be discovered. |
