A straw bale garden room by Barbara Jones

This 3.5m (11ft 6inch) diameter straw bale garden room was built in 2006 in a garden near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. It's owned by Sue and Richard Nichol who did their own carpentry with mentoring from straw bale builder Barbara Jones who also did the design and ran workshops for the straw building and lime plastering. Inside the room there's a sleeping platform underneath the coloured glass skylight.

It doesn't look very big but this straw bale roundhouse seats 16 people around its wood burning stove.

Barbara was one of the first women in Europe to break the male dominated building industry. For years she has been building straw bale homes, first as Amazonails but more recently as Straw Works.

In March 2011 Barbara  won the Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Construction. If you take a look at some of her work on the Natural Homes Map (right) you will see why. She's built some beautiful homes. Click on the straw icons to see a pop-up bubble that will show you the home and give a short description with links to the owner or to Straw Works website.
