A Cob Sauna in Birchville, California, USA.

Cob is an ancient building material consisting of clay soil, course sand and straw. Combined with water it's used to build thick strong walls.

This is a cob sauna in Birchville, California, USA by Rob Pollacek (below) of California Cob. The steam for the sauna is made in a metal box filled with stones that heats up on the top of a wood burning stove (below left).

Because cob walls are so thick it's easy to sculpt in niches and built-in shelves. Here's an example on more of Robs work in our Facebook natural building group.

Rob started working with cob in 1999 after reading 'Cobbers Companion'. That, combined with moving to an area rich in good red clay, inspired him to build a small cab wall in his carport. Soon after his first taste of cobbing he helped a friend build her cob house over the next couple years while hosting workshops with Cob Cottage Co. In 2000 and 2001 Rob apprenticed with Cob Cottage Co. taking their first apprenticeship program in Coquille, OR, USA.

Rob is inspired by small intimate spaces sitting cross legged on the floor. His tiny buildings are womb like space with soft curving walls and sacred altars lit by candle light and the glow of a fire.
