Gary Zuker's slip-straw home in Austin, Texas, USA

Gary Zuker built this 832sq.ft (77m2) slip-straw (clay and straw) home in Austin, Texas, USA without any previous building experience.

Back In 1990 few cob homes were being built so Gary researched European 15th century cob homes at his local university. After working with a few cobbers Gary realised he had all the tools he needed to build his home, determination, creativity, ingenuity and himself. Three years later his home was complete. You can find his home on the Natural Homes Map.

Garry is a great proponent of Alexander's A Pattern Language. He has incorporated 118 of the patterns in his home many of which came into being naturally because of the building technique and natural materials he was using. Gary also added a few of his own valuable insight like, "You cannot build something beautiful if your mind is on the clock".

In the video (right) Gary talks about some of the patterns he incorporated into his home like Pattern No 110, Main Entrance and Pattern No 104, Site Repair where he says,

"The most beautiful places on your [building] lot, all you can do is mess them up, and the worst places, all you can do is improve them."
