A Norwegian longhouse with a unique central fireplace.

One of the log longhouse (langhus) cabins with a long central fireplace in the very north of Norway on the Norwegian Russian border near Kirkenes. The cabin is the lunch time destination for a longboat river tour across brown bear country. The cabin was designed by Trine Beddari and built by her husband Tor who together run their family husky company.

The Longhouse has a cosy atmosphere where up to 40 people get to sit around one of the two long open fires which are known as Nordic tipi television. The fire fills the silence between conversations without anyone feeling awkward.

Strictly speaking this isn't a longhouse but it does have much of the community spirit the original longhouses shared. Here are a few examples of faithful reproductions of Viking Longhouses based on archaeological excavations.
